Broncos OT Mike McGlinchey praises Bo Nix after running team’s first offense

Denver Broncos Right tackle Mike McGlinchey is hoping the offense can “hit the ground running” in 2024 after the unit took a long time to get going last year. In his second season as a Bronco, McGlinchey is hoping to build on a solid, if unspectacular, debut.

Unlike his first year in Denver, McGlinchey is following an open quarterback competition in training camp, meaning he’s had to block for three different players since practice resumed last week. Current quarterback Jarrett Stidham is competing with rookie first-rounder Bo Nix and veteran newcomer Zach Wilson for the starting job.

It’s clear that Broncos fans who have been at training camp since Friday are rooting for Nixand we learned last weekend that the internal team management excited about what it has seenBut what about Nix’s fellow players, and specifically the players themselves?

Monday was the Broncos’ first practice with pads, which coincided with Nix’s first team practice. McGlinchey was asked about Nix after Monday’s practice, and his impressions of the rookie should only encourage fans.

“I think everyone talks about his maturity. He’s learned quickly on the job and he’s a very competitive guy,” McGlinchey said of Nix. “He takes a lot of pride in not messing things up — and if he messes up once, he won’t mess up again. He takes the little details, like the cadence — it’s tough. He always comes up, asks me, asks the rest of us, ‘Hey, how can I do that better? How can I do this better?'”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Nix’s tendency to learn quickly. His football IQ, his ability to cram information and process it effectively, was one of the Broncos’ biggest draws.

McGlinchey seems equally impressed with Nix’s football brain.

“Bo’s been an impressive person in our locker room, both as a player — I think he picks things up incredibly quickly and does a great job,” McGlinchey said. “But as a competitor and as a teammate, he’s done a great job. Bo’s on the right track. I think he’s going to use the coaching he’s getting — he’s got some of the best in the world helping him. And I think he’s going to do some great things for us.”

McGlinchey is relatively new to the Broncos, but he’s a leader in that locker room. Guys, watch him. If he says good things about the rookie, it’s probably an accurate representation of how the other veterans in the Broncos locker room feel about Nix so far.

Time will tell what “great things” Nix can accomplish with the Broncos. For now, he’s still knee-deep in this quarterback competition as he soaks up his first NFL training camp.
