Iowa Football Lineman Transfer Cade Borud Arrested for OWI

IOWA CITY — Iowa football offensive lineman Cade Borud was arrested early Saturday morning on a charge of driving under the influence, according to Polk County records.

According to arrest records, police observed Borud “weaving in his lane and traveling across a two-way street” while operating a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Police said Borud admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages prior to operating his vehicle. Police said Borud had bloodshot and watery eyes.

According to police, Borud consented to a field sobriety test and showed signs of impaired driving, failing the walk and turn tests and failing the one-legged stand test.

Borud consented to a preliminary breath test, which indicated a breath alcohol concentration of 0.188%, according to arrest records. He also consented to a DataMaster test, which indicated a breath alcohol concentration of 0.177%.

In Iowa, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher.

According to Polk County records, this was Borud’s first offense.

“The UI Athletics department and the football program are aware of Cade Borud’s ticket this past weekend,” a program spokesperson said in a statement. “He is subject to established university protocol regarding the UI Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and the rules and regulations established for members of the football program.”

Borud is entering his first season with the Iowa football program after transferring to the Hawkeyes this offseason. Borud, who attended Southeast Polk High School, spent two seasons at North Dakota. He broke out for North Dakota last season, starting 12 games at center and earning recognition on the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team.

That led to the Hawkeyes pursuing him for a second recruiting cycle. While at Southeast Polk, Borud turned down a preferred spot at Iowa to go to North Dakota. But when another preferred spot at Iowa came up after his time at North Dakota, Borud took it.

Because Borud retained his redshirt during his freshman year at North Dakota, he came to Iowa with three seasons of eligibility remaining. Given the lack of wear and tear on Iowa’s offensive line, Borud wasn’t expected to be a major part of the equation in the near future. But Borud could prove to be a substantial asset to Iowa’s offensive line in the long run.

This is the second Iowa football player to be arrested for drunk driving this summer.

According to arrest records, curator Kaleb Brown was arrested in June on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of a false driver’s license, ID card or form.

In late July, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz announced that Brown would be suspended for one game, which was standard protocol during Ferentz’s tenure with the Hawkeyes. That means he would miss the Hawkeyes’ 2024 season opener against Illinois State on Aug. 31.
