Latest bets for Harris’ VP: Kelly, Shapiro on top

As the clock for the 2024 presidential election approaches 100 days until November 5, one big question hangs over the campaign of presumptive Democratic nominee for Vice President Kamala Harris: Who will be her running mate?

The betting market, which US bookmakers cannot participate in, has kept two favourites at the top of the odds while other options have moved up the rankings.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly are split on the books that USA TODAY regularly examines.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has stirred up the bookmakers. Last Tuesday, the race started at +3500 at British bookmaker Bet365 and on Monday, the race was at +500.

Gambling experts told USA TODAY that the odds are a snapshot of how gamblers are feeling at any given time and that much could change before Harris announces her pick.

“(The market) fluctuates almost every hour, especially when it comes to something like the vice presidential nominee, because it’s based on one news story or maybe even a rumor,” Ryan Butler, senior news analyst at gambling site Covers.com, told USA TODAY in an interview.

Butler said that bettors in Europe make their decisions at the betting counter with the eye of a casual observer, especially in the market for the vice presidential nomination.

“You don’t see a lot of well-informed, sharp bets. It’s just a lot of people who want to put some money into it and want something to watch,” Butler said.
