Why Mike McGlinchey Believes Bo Nix Will Do “Great Things” for the Denver Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Bo Nix has yet to throw a single snap in the NFL, but he’s already turning heads in the Denver Broncos locker room.

“Bo’s been an impressive person in our locker room, (not only) as a player — I think he picks things up incredibly quickly and does a great job — but as a competitor and as a teammate he’s done a great job,” veteran offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey said Monday after the Broncos’ fifth practice of training camp.

In his five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before signing with the Broncos in 2023, McGlinchey was part of two teams that went to the NFC Championship Game and another that went to the Super Bowl. As a result, McGlinchey is surrounded by the elite players in the league and knows what it takes to be great. And he sees that in Nix.

“He’s learned quickly on the job and he’s a very competitive guy,” Denver’s starting right tackle added.

During the draft process, one of the biggest selling points about Nix to Sean Payton, George Paton and the Broncos front office was his ability to pick up information quickly. Not surprisingly, that trait has translated to the NFL, according to McGlinchey.

“I think everyone is talking about his maturity,” McGlinchey said.

With a record 61 starts in college and his 24-year-old age, it’s not surprising that Nix carries himself with maturity and poise around his teammates.

McGlinchey then pointed to a specific example of what the rookie did that stood out to him.

“He always comes to me and asks me and the rest of us, ‘How can I do this better’ or ‘How can I do that better,'” McGlinchey revealed of Nix. “He takes a lot of pride in not messing things up, and if he does once, he’s not going to do it again.”

Through five practices of training camp, McGlinchey’s praise for Nix has been valid. The rookie hasn’t made many bad decisions with the ball and has thrown just one interception in camp. Payton has even praised the rookie’s ball security and decision-making.

“I think Bo is on the right track,” added McGlinchey, who took a broader view of Nix’s future. “I think he’ll accept the coaching he’s getting. He’s got some of the best in the world helping him and I think he’s going to do some great things for us.”

Nix remains in a tight quarterback competition with Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson. But despite that, the rookie has clearly earned the trust of the locker room, even the veteran ones, for when his number is called.
