Questions remain about the murder of Sonya Massey and the accused officer

CHICAGO (CBS) — Friends and neighbors of Sonya Massey, along with community leaders, meet with the Department of Justice in Springfield, but Important questions still remain about the deputy sheriff accused of murder for her shooting.

Along with the U.S. Department of Justice, the mayor of Springfield and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will be present for what they are calling a listening session.

One of the big questions in the community will undoubtedly be why the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office hired this officer. Sean Grayson after being discharged from the military for misconduct and having worked for six departments in four years.

Audio recordings obtained by CBS News reveal that two years before he shot and killed Sonya Massey in her Springfield home, Deputy Sheriff Sean Grayson was reprimanded for false information in his police reports. He was working for the Logan County Illinois Sheriff’s Office at the time.

Documents obtained by CBS News also show that Grayson’s disciplinary file included allegations of bullying and abuse of power.

Last week, bodycam video was released showing Deputy Grayson shooting Massey as she crouched in her kitchen. Grayson was arrested and charged with murder.

The union representing Sangamon County sheriff’s deputies is asking that his employment be reinstated and he be compensated for any lost wages.

A meeting is expected in Chicago on Tuesday, with the Massey family expected to attend.
