A fire broke out on Kitsap Transit’s Admiral Pete ferry Monday night while en route from Bremerton to Annapolis. No passengers were injured, but the ship will be taken off route for repairs.

The Admiral Pete was on a normal voyage when the crew noticed smoke coming from the engine room, Sanjay Bhatt, spokesman for Kitsap Transit, said Monday.

The crew of the ferry Waterman, which runs between Bremerton and Port Orchard, tied up next to the Admiral Pete and pumped water to cool the outside of the ship. The ship later docked at its stop in Annapolis, with no injuries to passengers or crew.

Firefighters went to the ferry dock but the fire had already been extinguished by the ferry crew when they arrived, Bhatt said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Admiral Pete will be out of service until further notice, Bhatt said, and will be returned to Port Orchard on Tuesday. The Carlisle 2 will replace the bank ship on the Bremerton-Annapolis route on an alternate schedule. Kitsap Transit will send an alert to passengers with the alternate route’s arrival and departure times.
