The Connecticut primary election will be held on August 13, with early voting scheduled for August 5-11. The winners of the primary will be placed on the ballot for the November 5 general election.

The Connecticut primary is for registered party members only. Unaffiliated voters (those registered to vote but not affiliated with a political party) must register with the party of their choice by the voter registration deadline to participate in the primary.

Candidates who have no opposing candidates do not participate in the primaries.

Here’s what you need to know about the state primaries.

Can I vote in the Connecticut primary elections?

In Connecticut, there are only primaries when there is a race.

All 169 communities have Republican primaries; only 28 communities have Democratic primaries.

The following communities have Democratic primaries: Bethany, Bloomfield, Bridgeport, Chaplin, Colchester, Danbury, East Granby, Ellington, Enfield, Granby, Hamden, Hampton, Hartford, Lebanon, Monroe, New Britain, New Haven, Norwalk, Scotland, Somers, Stamford, Stratford, Suffield, Trumbull , West Hartford, Windham, Windsor, Windsor Locks.

There is a Republican race to get on the ballot for the U.S. Senate. Because the U.S. Senator is a statewide position, each city and town will have a Republican primary.

In the following municipalities, in addition to the primaries for the US Senate, there is also a Republican primary: Bridgeport, Bridgewater, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Greenwich, Hebron, Killingly, Mansfield, Monroe, New Canaan, New Milford, Norwalk, Oxford, Pomfret, Putnam, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Scotland, Shelton, Southbury, Stamford, Thompson, Trumbull, Weston, Westport, Wilton, Windham.

Who is on the ballot for my primary election?

There are no Democratic primaries in the municipalities surrounding Norwich.

As in all communities in Connecticut, there is a Republican primary in all communities in the Norwich area. In this race, Gerry Smith of Beacon Falls is running against Matthew M. Corey of Manchester.

Of the communities in the Norwich area, only Killingly will also have a Republican primary for the Senate seat currently held by Mae Flexer. The district also includes the cities of Brooklyn, Canterbury, Mansfield, Pomfret, Putnam, Scotland, Thompson and Windham.

In the Republican Senate race, voters can choose between Chris Reddy of Hampton and Susanne Witkowski of Thompson.

Why is there an asterisk next to some candidates’ names?

The asterisk indicates that the candidate is supported by the state party.

When is early voting?

Early voting begins on Monday, August 5, and will be available for seven days, ending on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Early voting locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each early voting day, except Tuesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 8, when there will be extended early voting hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Where can I vote early?

Early voting usually takes place at a different location than the polling stations on election day.

In Norwich, early voting takes place at City Hall, 100 Broadway, Norwich.

In Griswold, early voting takes place at City Hall (meeting room), 28 Main St., Jewett City.

In Killingly, early voting takes place at City Hall, Clerk’s Office, 175 Main St., Danielson.

Plainfield has two early voting locations. Voters in precincts 001-47 and 002-44 vote at City Hall, 8 Community Ave., Plainfield. Voters in precincts 003-44 vote at the Moosup Fire Department, 37 South Main St., Moosup.

Am I registered to vote?

You can check the status of your voter registration on the CT Secretary of State’s website.

When is the deadline for voter registration for the primary elections?

Voter Day registration is open for the November general election, but not for the primaries.

To vote in person on Election Day, first-time voters (voters who have never previously registered to vote in Connecticut) and independent voters (voters who have registered to vote but have not registered with a political party) must register in person at the city clerk’s or county clerk’s office no later than Monday, August 12 at noon.

New voters who wish to vote early must register in person no later than the business day before the day they wish to vote.

Independent voters who wish to vote early must register in person by Friday, August 2, at noon.

When will the results be available?

City and village clerks will begin publishing results after all votes have been counted. They may not count votes until after polling stations close at 8 p.m. on August 13.
