New England Weather Forecast: Warm, Humid Weather Returns

The start of the workweek saw cooler temperatures and showers as a coastal low moved into New England and began to lose steam. But Greater Boston and much of the southern region should see a shift in the weather pattern as a strong southerly flow builds heat across the region amid a mix of sun and clouds — pushing temperatures into the mid-80s, with a few spots closer to 90 farther out from the city.

Fragments of energy from yesterday’s system will continue to linger in northern New England today, creating scattered showers throughout the day.

Depending on how much surface heating the region receives, a marginally unstable atmosphere could lead to isolated or scattered showers in the area, primarily around noon and into the afternoon. Showers should move in quickly, and there is a good chance that Boston will remain dry for most of the day. Rainfall totals will be a quarter inch or less.

This broad pattern will bring humidity back to muggy conditions with dew points reaching the high 60s and low 70s today and lasting through the rest of the work week. A handful of heat index readings could top 90 degrees today.

Tuesday’s overview

Southern New England: Heat returns with a strong southerly flow, temperatures and dew points rising. A mix of sun and clouds with a chance of a quick shower or two, while highs reach the mid-80s with muggy conditions. A fairly strong breeze develops with winds around 15 mph.

Western Massachusetts: Partly cloudy skies with daily highs rising into the low 80s in the Berkshires and into the mid 80s from Greenfield to Springfield. Scattered showers possible around noon and into the afternoon. Rainfall totals should remain under a quarter inch. The air will feel thick with dew points hovering around 70 degrees.

Cape and Islands: More sunshine than clouds today as a strong southerly flow will be felt with winds of 15 to 20 mph. Temperatures will reach the upper 70s on the islands and the low 80s on the peninsula. A few showers are possible, but much of the region will remain dry. Humidity will also rise here with dew points in the upper 60s.

Northern New England: A touch cooler in Maine as parts of the low pressure system bring persistent showers throughout the day. More clouds than sun will also limit daytime warming. Highs should be in the upper 70s in the Pine Tree State, while New Hampshire and Vermont will drop back into the mid-80s. Afternoon showers and a few thunderstorms are possible, with precipitation totals generally below half an inch. Some storms that develop could bring brief downpours with locally higher amounts. Dry spells will alternate with scattered showers.
