New law changes vehicle inspection prices

A new law increases the cost of vehicle inspections performed by sheriff’s departments across the state.

The new law, passed by the state Legislature in Frankfort, raises the inspection fee to $15, and $35 if the sheriff’s office has to travel to another location for the inspection.

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office said in July that it conducted 87 vehicle inspections and last month paid $45. The sheriff’s office also noted that the fee increase was not a decision made by the office, but was passed at the state level and that sheriff’s offices in Kentucky must adhere to the new fee structure.

The proceeds from these inspections are deposited into the sheriff’s account, which is used to keep the office running.

These inspections are for residents who are registering a vehicle from out of state or if someone has purchased one out of state with the intention of obtaining a local license plate for it. A vehicle inspection is also a requirement for out-of-state vehicles to obtain a Kentucky title.

The inspections must guarantee that the vehicle is ‘roadworthy’ and safe.
