Reverend Dwayne Walker Appointed Bishop at AME Zion Church

The Reverend Dwayne A. Walker, pastor of Little Rock AME Zion Church in Charlotte, has been named bishop of AME Zion Church. He will now lead the church’s Alabama-Florida Episcopal District.

The vote took place on Sunday, July 28, during the 52nd Quadrennial General Meeting of the AME Zion Church, held at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.

Walker, the son of retired Bishop George W. C. Walker Sr., is now 111th in the denomination’s line of succession. He was named pastor of Little Rock AME Zion Church in 2005.

Walker, born in Rock Hill, holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Livingstone College, where he now serves on the board of trustees. He earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Local church distributes school supplies

New Foundation Church International is hosting its annual school supplies drive for students who need book bags and school supplies for the upcoming school year.

Between now and August 2, the church is collecting backpacks and laptop bags filled with pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, gift cards and more.

On Saturday, August 10th, the church will host a School Supply Giveaway from 11am-2pm (while supplies last). The event will include free food, games, and activities with the Charlotte Fire Department.

Christian Rapper Aaron Cole Performs at Gardner-Webb University

The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, and is part of the university’s inaugural concert series, “Summer in the Springs,” at the Brinkley Amphitheater in Boiling Springs.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Doors open at 6:00 PM and the show starts at 8:00 PM. All seats are general admission.

Tickets are free for Gardner-Webb students and $15 for everyone else. They can be purchased in advance or at the door.

Cole, 25, is a two-time Dove Award winner, a distinction from the Gospel Music Association of the United States. He was born and raised in Bristol, Virginia.
