Globe to block nearly 200,000 URLs containing child pornography from January to June 2024

Efforts against illegal gambling have also been intensified

Globe said the number of child pornography and illegal gambling sites it was able to block increased this year compared to last year.

From January to June 2024, the telco said it had blocked 1,718 domains and 190,167 URLs related to child pornography. The numbers rose from 1,295 domains and 129,652 URLs registered in 2023.

Globe also blocked access to 2,726 domains of illegal gambling sites, compared to 1,828 last year.

Globe has outlined a number of programs that could support the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 (Republic Act 9775). It is possible that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) could use their technology to access child pornography, Globe said.

Globe says it has invested more than US$2.7 million (PHP151.2 million) in advanced content filtering systems to strengthen its fight against illegal content.

The company also partners with various organizations such as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators and non-governmental organizations to enhance child protection online.

According to the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the Philippines is one of the largest sources of online child sexual abuse and exploitation (OSAEC) content.

During the #MakeITSafePH campaign launched in 2017, Globe launched educational programs for awareness activities to help large groups of people protect themselves online, the telco said.
