Former prosecutor Agostino Cordova dies at age 88 in Reggio Calabria

Last night in Reggio Calabria, at the age of 10 88the magistrate Augustine Cordoba died. He was the former head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Palmi and Naples. Cordova, originally from Reggio, had lived in recent years between his hometown and Naples. He entered the judiciary in 1963 and served as a magistrate in Reggio Calabria, first in the criminal court and then in the civil court, until 1970. He then moved to the court, where he was a member of the commission for five years.

Then he went to the investigation agency, where he remained until 1980During that period he carried out important experiments against ‘ndrangheta clansincluding that against the so-called ‘group of the 60s’ led by Paolo De Stefano, who was killed in an ambush in Reggio Calabria in October 1985.

The trial ended with the conviction of most of the defendants. From 1980 to 1987 Cordova was president of the criminal section of the Tribunal of Reggio Calabria. In December 1987 he was appointed head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Palmi. During this period, his investigation into alleged connections between the Mafia, politics and Freemasonry caused a stir, leading to the confiscation of all the lists of Freemasons of the Goi. Also during his time in Calabria, another investigation into alleged irregularities in contracts for the construction of the Enel thermal power station in Gioia Tauro led to the confiscation of the construction site in July 1990. After his term in Palmi ended, he applied to the National Anti-Mafia Directorate, but was unsuccessful. Then, in July 1993, he was appointed chief prosecutor in Naples.
