Macau gaming companies feel the impact as regulators crack down on criminal gangs

New regulations in Macau aimed at stamping out illegal money have hit the share prices of some of the region’s major gambling companies.

The stricter legislation surrounding illegal money means that significantly harsher penalties will be imposed on individuals who are part of criminal money-changing gangs.

The new legislation comes from the Standing Committee of the Macau Legislative Assembly. The assembly’s chairman, Chan Chak Mo, stressed that as long as “illegal currency exchange takes place within the premises of casinos or their associated facilities, law enforcement may consider such exchange as carried out for the purpose of gambling.”
