Cyberpunk, explosions and Mick Gordon: the first trailer for the team shooter Defect from the former developers of Doom, The Last of Us and Max Payne

Defect is set in a dystopian future in the last city on Earth, ruled by The System, an “authoritarian AI with inhuman logic.” Clashes between police and criminal gangs take place on the streets. The developers describe the game as an “immersive shooter.”

The game supports multiplayer PvP and cooperative modes. Four teams of four people each take part in battles. The factions include the System Police, corrupt cops (Rogue Police) and various gangs fighting for power. In each match you have to complete different objectives (weapons smuggling, assassinations, arresting suspects). The “state-of-the-art arsenal” and random items that can change the course of the battle are announced.

Recommended system requirements include a processor such as the Intel Core i7-9700K clocked at 3.6GHz and an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, a graphics card no worse than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 with 8GB of memory, 16GB of RAM, and an SSD.

The collective Emptyvessel, which announced itself in March of this year, is entering the sector with veterans:

Development Director Emanuel Palalic, who created content for Doom and Killing Floor 3; General Manager Garrett Young, who has held senior positions at Microsoft, Activision, Disney and id Software, helped reboot Doom, Quake and Rage and was involved in the creation of Forza Motorsport; Senior Design Director Kevin Powell, who led the development of combat mechanics and gameplay systems for Borderlands, Smite and Tribes; Animation Director Rico Flores, an animator on Uncharted and Anthem; Character Designer Colin Thomas, who worked on Uncharted, The Last of Us and Resistance; Design Director Dan Moditch, who has created Doom, Call of Duty and Medal of Honor; Art Director Alex Palma (Doom (2016), Doom Eternal and Killing Floor 3); Jake Gordon (technical artist and animator on Tomb Raider, Batman, Rock Band, Fable and Max Payne); and technical director Wei Ning of New Zealand’s Weta Digital, a visual effects studio that also worked on Blade Runner 2049.

The team is advised by Riley Russell, former senior vice president of Sony Interactive Entertainment and current executive vice president of Kojima Productions’ Los Angeles division. The team is also working with renowned composer Mick Gordon, who wrote the music for Doom (2016), Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Atomic Heart.

The video received positive feedback from players, who noted similarities to Cyberpunk 2077, Doom (2016), and the 2012 film Judge Dredd 3D. They also reacted enthusiastically to the news of Mick Gordon’s soundtrack.

Defect is coming to PC (Steam). Release dates are not specified. Only English language is announced.
