Tragedy strikes migrants in northern Mexico

One migrant was killed and eight others were injured in a tragic incident in northern Mexico when unknown assailants opened fire on their vehicle, authorities said Monday.

The deceased migrant was a boy from southern Mexico, while the injured were from Mexico, Ecuador and Africa.

The attack occurred Sunday in Tubutama, a township about 47 miles south of Sasabe along the Arizona border, Sonoran prosecutors said. While no motive was released, the region is known for clashes between rival gangs of migrant smugglers with ties to drug cartels.

Human traffickers often face violence from cartels demanding money for safe passage through their territory. Sometimes attacks occur when payments are not made.
