Tragedy at Arizona border, migrant boy killed, eight injured in Mexico shooting amid cartels’ turf war

In a somber development south of our border with Arizona, officials in Mexico have confirmed that a migrant boy from southern Mexico was killed and eight other people were injured after unknown assailants opened fire on their vehicle, KGUN reports. The incident, which occurred in the township of Tubutama, about 47 miles from Sasabe, happened Sunday and has raised concerns about the safety of migrants crossing areas plagued by cartel violence.

According to ABC15, prosecutors in the northern state of Sonora have not identified a clear motive behind the attack. However, they acknowledge that the area has seen violent clashes between rival gangs of migrant smugglers, often linked to the drug cartels that plague the region. The injured included a mix of citizens from Mexico, Ecuador and several African countries.

Few details are known at this time about the identities of the victims and the attackers.
