Mafunyeta Memorial attracts huge crowds – The Times Group

MASSIVE — An artist performs

By Jimmy Chazama:

The seventh edition of the Mafunyeta Memorial Show took place on Sunday at the National War Memorial Tower Road in Lilongwe and attracted a huge audience.

The monument lived up to its promises: the audience, mainly made up of young people, enjoyed the performances of various artists who celebrated the life of reggae dancehall musician Mafunyeta, real name Patrick Magalasi.

The monument also proved to be a perfect platform to raise awareness among young people about mental and reproductive health and technology.

Some of the artists who performed at the memorial show included Malinga Mafia, Blaze, Kellie Devine, Riffle Dynamic, Mellz Kumpanje, Provoice, Toriah, Lady Aika, Ace Jizzy and Gibo Lantos.

Malinga Mafia, known for songs like ‘Arasi’, put on a lively performance that got people excited, despite the fact that they jumped onto the stage with the help of a walking stick.

The artist recently injured his leg before receiving medical attention.

Hifi Electronics, one of the event’s sponsors, has announced that it plans to invite an international artist next year.

“We are impressed with the turnout and next year we will bring in a Jamaican artist,” said the company’s events director, Blessed Adam.

Esther Sagawa, Mayor of Lilongwe and guest of honour, praised the organisers for keeping Mafunyeta’s legacy alive with the memorial show.

“The monument is also used to spread important messages to the youth,” Sagawa said.

One of the organizers, Yanja Chigamba, expressed his satisfaction with this year’s event and called it a success.

“There has been an improvement compared to previous editions, especially as more partners have come forward to support,” said Chigamba.

Mafunyeta, who passed away on August 11, 2013, contributed immensely to the growth of the creative sector. His songs include ‘Kangobwera’ and ‘Ndimakondwa’.
