School is (almost) back in session! Where will the new generation of royals go this fall?

The young royals are growing up and it’s almost time to go back to school!

After a summer vacation spent attending the Summer Olympics in Paris or undertaking extrajudicial duties or military training, many are returning to school or planning their next steps.

Below we summarize where Europe’s royals study and train.

Princess Elisabeth, future Queen of the Belgians

Princess Elisabeth has had a busy few years with her education. After graduating from UWC Atlantic in 2020 (starting a trend of other European princesses attending the school), she studied for a while at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels before heading back to the UK.

From 2021 until earlier this summer, Princess Elizabeth was a student at Lincoln College, Oxford, where she read history and politics. She graduated in July with upper second class honours in the presence of her parents, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, and her siblings.

The Belgian Royal Court announced before her graduation that she would go to Harvard in the United States from the fall. The future Queen of the Belgians will study for a master’s degree in public policy.

Princess Leonor, future Queen of Spain

After a year of military training at the General Military Academy and receiving the rank of Dame Cadet, Princess Leonor is now entering her second year of military training, with a period at the Naval Academy.

Starting in the fall, Princess Leonor will be a student and midshipman at the Military Naval School in Marín, before undergoing practical training on the ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano. In 2025, she will complete her three-year military training at the General Air Academy. After that, she could pursue a traditional university education, although no announcements have been made yet.

Crown Prince Christian, future King of Denmark

It’s been a hectic year for Crown Prince Christian. In January, he officially became Crown Prince of Denmark after his grandmother’s shocking abdication. In June, he graduated from high school at Ordrup Gymnasium with his family by his side, surrounded by classmates and showered with champagne (really!).

When asked by reporters what his plans were for the fall, Crown Prince Christian kept quiet. “I will probably explore the world, test myself in new ways and prepare for different things,” he said.

To date, the Danish court has not yet announced the Crown Prince’s future plans. Whether he will take a gap year, start military training immediately or go to university first is still a mystery.

The future Queen of the Netherlands has had a tough road with her further education. Princess Catharina-Amalia announced in 2022 that she would study at the University of Amsterdam, taking courses for a degree in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics.

The royal moved into a student house that fall, but was soon forced to return home due to a kidnapping threat from the Moroccan mafia. Things got so bad that Princess Amalia had to move abroad to Spain for part of 2023 to continue her education online.

On King’s Day earlier this year, the future queen told a Dutch newspaper: “Of course, it was strange circumstances that brought me there. I am still very grateful to everyone who made it possible for me to walk around there in freedom. I found a little more freedom there than was possible here.”

Princess Amalia attracted even more attention when she announced that she would start collecting her annual allowance to cover operational costs, even though she will continue to study full-time next school year.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, the future Queen of Norway, announced late last year that she would be training with the Engineer Battalion in Brigade Nord in 2024. The princess is still in the midst of her military training and no formal announcements have been made about her educational plans for 2025.

Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane of the Netherlands

At the end of last week, the Dutch Court announced that the middle daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will study at University College London from the end of September.

Princess Alexia will study for a Bachelor of Science & Engineering for Social Change. According to the University College London website, students will be taught by “etechnology, social and political perspectives” to win “multidisciplinary knowledge that is in demand in business, charities, government and policy positions.”

The Dutch princess previously attended UWC Atlantic in Wales, where Princess Elisabeth, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía are alumni. She graduated in 2023 and took the last year as a gap year.

Princess Ariane, the youngest of the Dutch princesses, will return to UWC Adriatic this fall for her final year of study.

Infanta Sofia of Spain

Princess Leonor’s younger sister was perhaps even more famous this summer. Her passion for sport saw her cheer on Spanish athletes at the Olympics and watch the men’s football team achieve a historic European Championship victory.

But now that autumn is approaching, Sofia is heading back to Wales. She is currently a student at UWC Atlantic in Wales, following in the footsteps of her older sister. She is entering her second year of study.

The Royal Siblings of Denmark

Princess Isabella, second in line to the Danish throne, will soon be in her final year at Øregård Gymnasium.

Their parents may now be king and queen, but for Denmark’s royal siblings, it’s time to go back to school as usual as the summer holidays come to an end.

Third and fourth in line are Prince Vincent, who attends Tranegårdskolen, and his twin sister Princess Josephine, who attends Kildegård Privatskole.

All changes in Belgium

Prince Gabriel, who has just turned 21, is continuing his military training and as part of this will go to the Ecole Militaire Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan in France for an Erasmus course.

The four children of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians enjoyed the Olympic Games in Paris together, before three of them left for their education abroad.

His younger brother, Prince Emmanuel, is also going abroad to continue his education. He obtained his IB at the International School of Brussels and will study abroad. Princess Eléonore, the youngest member of the Belgian royal family, is still a student at the International School of Brussels.

The Silent Prince of Norway

While his family has faced controversy, Prince Sverre Magnus has kept a low profile this summer.

And the royals are still in primary school…..

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are returning to Lambrook in Windsor. The future of Prince George’s education is currently a hot topic in the press: will he follow the Eton route like his father or will he go to another school? Only time will tell. As is the case with British private schools, the age of thirteen is a traditional transition age, so the decision is still a long way off.

Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar of Sweden are back for a new semester at Campus Manila in Djurgården, just outside Stockholm.
