15 Great Photos from the Second Night of the DNC

Democratic National Convention Day 2: Electric Boogaloo. And that’s literally true. The second night of the convention was just as loud and joyful as the first, but this time there was music — so much music — and also some of the biggest speeches from some of the biggest names in Democratic politics. Bernie Sanders, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama — ever heard of them?

Here are 15 photos that capture the atmosphere of the night.

In stark contrast to the dull roll call at the Republican National Convention, the DNC’s ceremonial voting was enhanced by excellent needle drops from DJ Cassidy, pictured above.

(If you want to read up on how the RNC roll calls went, this is the answer.)

A delegate from Iowa pulled out a giant cob of corn.
California’s delegation, which included Governor Gavin Newsom and Representatives Maxine Waters and Nancy Pelosi, cast their votes for Kendrick Lamar’s hit, Drake-dissing song “Not Like Us.”
What do you think they do with all those head cutouts after the DNC is over?
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham focused her speech on health care, sharing powerful personal stories, including one about Harris losing her mother to colon cancer.
In his speech, Senator Bernie Sanders pressed for policy priorities, such as Medicare for All, that he would like to see Harris pass.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, looking like a 1920s mob boss, slammed Trump when he said, “Democrats want more than anything else economic policies that are kind, not cruel. But Trump chooses cruelty every time.”
Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Maryland, used her primetime speaking slot to talk about her 14-year friendship with Harris, whom Alsobrooks called a “friend, mentor and role model.”
Tammy Duckworth, a war veteran who lost both her legs in Iraq and a senator from Illinois, attacked Donald Trump on reproductive rights. “Trump’s anti-women crusade has jeopardized the right of other Americans to have their own families,” she said. “Because if they win, Republicans won’t stop at banning abortion. They’ll come next for (in vitro fertilization). They’ll prosecute doctors. They’ll shame and spy on women.”
It’s really impressive how enthusiastic Harris is.
Harris’ husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, shared personal stories about his wife in his heartfelt speech, calling her a “joyful warrior.”
Doug.
Michelle Obama took it to task in one of Donald Trump’s most infamous campaign lines, asking the audience, “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s applying for right now might be one of those ‘black jobs’?”
Barack Obama brought his hopeful-change magic to the Chicago stage, saying, “We want something better. We want to be better. And the joy and excitement that we see around this campaign tells us that we are not alone.”
Just imagine if Trump and Melania did this. It can’t be done.
