Calcutta:

Sandip Ghosh, former director of Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, who has been extensively questioned by the CBI in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor this month, was last year accused of corruption and trafficking in bodies and biomedical waste.

The allegations were made by Akhtar Ali, who was deputy medical director at RG Kar and now holds the same position at Murshidabad Medical College.

Mr. Ali told NDTV that he had filed complaints with the Vigilance Commission and the Anti-Corruption Bureau. He said he had also tried to file a police case but was turned down.

“(One) of my complaints was about the trade of biomedical waste. We all know that used syringes and medical waste like gloves of users should be disposed of as per disinfection norms, but he (Dr Ghosh) was selling this material to citizens of Bangladesh,” he told NDTV on Wednesday evening.

“A security officer named Khan was involved in this human trafficking…”

“Then, illegal sale of bodies. The head of the Forensic Medicine Department had complained… relatives (of those whose bodies he allegedly sold) also complained. A national commission summoned him…” Ali said, trailing off, suggesting that nothing had come of the summons.

Mr. Ali also accused Dr. Ghosh of taking bribes of 20 percent to give work orders or contracts and also deliberately failing students. “He was like a mafia person…,” Mr. Ali had said earlier.

“I have made all these allegations… but the authorities have not taken any action. Last night I went to a police station but they refused to accept an FIR,” he said, adding that he had also filed a criminal case in the Calcutta High Court against Sandip Ghosh. The case may be heard tomorrow, he said.

Last week, Ali also told ANI about his former boss: “He is a very corrupt person… Ghosh used to have a big security team. He is very powerful.”

Dr Ghosh was at the centre of the storm over the rape and murder of his junior colleague. His resignation, a few days after the body was found – on the grounds of moral responsibility as a ‘parent’ – was followed within hours by an appointment as head of the Calcutta National Medical College.

The appointment was questioned by the Supreme Court, which ordered him to go on “long leave”.

“If the director resigns out of ‘moral responsibility’, (it is) quite serious that he is rewarded with another appointment within 12 hours…” a bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam said: “He should be at home… and not working somewhere else.”

The court also wondered whether Trinamool’s ruling ‘protected’ Dr Ghosh.

Since then, Dr Ghosh has been questioned by the CBI, which took over the case on the instructions of the High Court. The agency has questioned him for over 60 hours in the past few days.

The Supreme Court also questioned his reappointment shortly after he left RG Kar and questioned him and the hospital management over the delay in registering a police complaint after the young doctor’s badly injured body was discovered in early August.

Meanwhile, despite allegations that the state was supporting him, the government of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has set up a special police team to probe the allegations.

He could also be charged with revealing the identity of the murdered doctor.
