“I had to say no, I can’t do this. Right is right, wrong is wrong,” the actor informed Disney producers about cutting “God” from the script. In response, he said that Disney employees involved in the production ridiculed his Christian religion, asking, “So you’re one of them?” Caviezel refused to budge, and God remained in the film.

Caviezel referenced a pivotal sequence in the film in which his character, Edmond Dantes, slowly carves the phrase “God will give me justice” into the prison cell wall. The sequence, based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, showed how long Caviezel’s character languished in captivity. Edmond ultimately believes that God has a plan for his life, which is why he survives and escapes from prison.

The name “Monte Cristo” literally means “Mountain of Christ” and is meant to create a link between Edmond’s imprisonment and Christ’s suffering on the cross. Caviezel understood that his character’s Christian faith was crucial to the plot, just as it was to his own life. “We have to be strong Christians like him,” the actor said of standing up to Disney, “to hold our ground when necessary. And say, ‘You know what, I’m not buying that product anymore.'”
