"Fourth time police failed to charge protesters, Monday we will charge FG" – Adeyanju Vows

Given the high expectations of Nigerians over the indictment of the protesters today (Friday), one of the protesters’ lawyers, Mr Deji Adeyanju, said the Nigerian police have failed to indict the protesters for the fourth time.

Adeyanju, in an interview with Saturday Vanguard, said the failure of the police is deliberate and that they want to keep the protesters in custody forever as they have no tangible and solid case against them.
Currently there are 100 protesters detained in Abuja, but on Monday we will ensure they are all released.

It is clear that the police have no grounds to charge the protesters

“The police don’t want to charge them because they don’t have anything on them, but they do want to keep them with them forever.”

We are going to sue FG on Monday

“We are going to charge them on Monday. They are punishing the protesters for their protest and they are also trying to prevent future protests; they are arresting protesters and refusing to charge them, and that also means that they have nothing tangible with them, and if they had, they would have charged them since then.

“Their refusal to charge them, they should release them because this is the fourth time they told us they were going to charge them, and all day we were in court, a coalition of different lawyers were all in court, but they didn’t show up.”

The international community should withdraw aid to security services

“The Inspector General of Police, IGP and security agencies in Nigeria are clearly violating the rights of Nigerians. Development partners should call on them to respect human rights and release protesters.”

“International partners that fund security services must withdraw their assistance if they do not respect human rights.”

Attorney General Calls on Security Forces to Release Protesters

“The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), someone we all respect and esteem, should call on the security services to release the protesters and respect their freedom that the Constitution has enshrined for the citizens, and the unnecessary detention of peaceful protesters.

“We also accuse the security services who should tackle the criminal gangs that are terrorizing the country and who have just murdered an emir and leave the protesters alone.”
