Burton man convicted of child sexual exploitation and child pornography

A Burton man was sentenced this week to federal prison for child sexual exploitation, federal officials said.

Nicholas Dunn, 42, was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison by a U.S. District Judge in Flint, Dawn N. Ison, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, said in a statement.

She said the judge also sentenced Dunn to five years of federal parole after his release from prison.

“This defendant’s actions were horrific and this sentence underscores our office’s commitment to bringing those who sexually exploit and abuse children to justice,” Ison said. “This conviction would not have been possible without the work of our dedicated law enforcement partners at HSI and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.”

Dunn’s attorney was not immediately available for comment Friday.

“I hope this 40-year sentence provides some comfort to the victims of this case so they can continue to heal from these terrible crimes,” HSI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Angie Salazar said in a statement.

In April, Dunn pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Federal prosecutors had originally charged him with three counts and sentenced him to a maximum of 60 years in prison.

Authorities have charged Dunn with sexually abusing five children and producing child pornography. He was one of four people charged last year in connection with a child pornography operation in Genesee County.

In December 2022, an undercover federal agent saw Preston Creed-Boehm, of Grand Blanc Township, posting an image of child pornography online, authorities said. They also said Creed-Boehm sent child pornography directly to the agent and described sexually abusing two underage victims.

Police arrested Creed-Boehm, searched his cellphones and discovered that Dunn had loaded one of the child porn images onto one of the devices, investigators said. They obtained a search warrant for the home where Dunn lived with another co-defendant, Joshua Hippensteel.

Federal authorities said Creed-Boehm and Hippensteel have been charged with sexual exploitation of a minor. Creed-Boehm has also been charged with distribution and possession of child pornography. The cases against Creed-Boehm and Hippensteel are ongoing.

“Dunn’s conviction demonstrates our unwavering commitment to combating child abuse and sexual violence,” Detective Lt. Robert Nicklesen of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our children is our top priority. We hope this case serves as a reminder that we must remain vigilant and proactive in protecting our communities.”

“We encourage anyone who suspects child abuse or has experienced abuse to contact their local authorities or child protection organizations,” he said. “You are not alone and there is help available.”
