Former San Luis High School Teacher Suspended Sentence

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A former San Luis High School teacher who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a student was back in court Friday, but his sentencing did not go as planned.

Ivan Martinez, 25, pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor and attempted sexual contact with a minor.

Martinez has been in custody for 225 days since his arrest on January 11. His sentencing was postponed on Friday after his attorney asked for more time.

Martinez was arrested after an investigation by the San Luis Police Department (SLPD) revealed that he had an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old high school student from October to December of last year.

When Martinez was arrested, police found nude photos of the girl in his possession.

A mitigation hearing is now scheduled for September 6, at which the court will consider circumstances that could reduce his sentence.
