Antigua and Barbuda Government Announces Tougher Measures Against Crime

Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Public Safety, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, has announced a series of strict measures aimed at restoring security across the country.

Minister Benjamin stressed the need for strict laws to effectively tackle the rising crime rate.

“We have to deal with the situation as it is. I will not shirk my responsibility,” Benjamin said, underscoring the government’s firm stance on crime. His comments echoed sentiments expressed by Prime Minister Gaston Browne in a national address earlier this week.

As part of the government’s robust response, Minister Benjamin announced increased penalties for weapons-related offenses, including a mandatory minimum prison sentence of five years.

“This is not a joke. Antigua will become a safe country again where we can all live,” he said, underlining the seriousness of the government’s commitment.

In addition to tougher penalties, the government will conduct stop-and-search exercises around the clock and increase police presence in crime hotspots. These measures are intended to deter criminal activity and improve public safety on the island.

Minister Benjamin also highlighted a worrying trend: the involvement of youth in criminal activities. “Our data shows that they are responsible for more than 85% of crimes committed in the state,” he noted. To address this problem, the government is preparing to introduce anti-gang legislation aimed at curbing the growth of gangs in various parts of the country.

The proposed legislation targets areas that have been identified as gang hotspots, including Villa, Ovals, Grace Farm, Golden Grove and Browns Avenue. The Minister assured the public that programs will be put in place to stop the growth of gang activity in these areas.

Minister Benjamin also expressed his gratitude to citizens who have cooperated with law enforcement by providing valuable information. He stressed that the police are committed to protecting themselves while carrying out their duties, especially when confronted by armed criminals.

“If the police are performing their duties and someone has a firearm and that person shoots at the police, then the police are obliged to defend themselves,” Benjamin confirmed.

The new measures taken by the government reflect a determined commitment to restoring peace and security to Antigua and Barbuda. They signal a tough approach to crime that will be enforced through decisive measures.
