Karkala rape not carried out by gang, victim still in shock: Udupi SP

UDUPI: Udupi SP Dr Arun K has warned of strict action against people spreading misinformation about the rape incident in Karkala and clarified that it was not a gang rape.

Soon after the incident came to light on Saturday, many, including BJP leader V Sunil Kumar and MP Captain Brijesh Chowta, termed the incident a ‘gang rape’, while some also gave it a communal tinge by calling it a case of ‘love jihad’.

However, the SP made it clear that, according to the preliminary investigation, there was no question of gang rape.

“The FIR register states that the victim was raped by Altaf, the main suspect in the case. The victim is now in shock and she has to come out of that shock. So the investigation will go even deeper and her statements will be recorded. She will make a statement before the judge,” the SP said.

“She has also given a statement to the doctor stating that it is not a gang rape. The medical examination report is awaited and that will give us a clearer picture,” he added.
