Keir Starmer accused of ‘making immigration worse’ after scrapping Tory measures: ‘You NEED a deterrent!’

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been accused of making immigration “worse” for Britain by repealing the outgoing Conservatives’ measures.

Since Starmer won the election by a landslide in July, more than 5,000 migrants have made the illegal Channel crossing into Britain.

However, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has promised a major response to the rising numbers, claiming Labour will deport more than 14,000 migrants by the end of 2024.

Cooper outlined her plans in parliament: “Our new Border Security Command will work with European enforcement agencies to find every possible way to defeat the criminal smuggling gangs who organise dangerous boat crossings that undermine our border security and put lives at risk.”

Speaking to GB News, former Conservative MP Damian Green warned the Labour Party that they need “a deterrent” similar to that of the Rwanda plan to successfully tackle migration.

Asked if he was “optimistic” about Labour’s plans, Green told GB News: “No – this government will benefit from the decisions the previous government made on legal migration, such as family visas, which will reduce numbers.

“But in terms of illegal migration and the small boats, everything this government does will probably only make it worse.”

Green stressed the need to scrap the Rwanda plan, which was successfully implemented just before Labour came to power, saying Starmer’s government “has nothing to replace it”.

Green said: “It appears they have cancelled the Rwanda programme and have nothing to replace it with.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

“They keep talking tough about having more people in a border command here. That’s fine, but actually all this crime is happening in other countries where the British police don’t have the power.

“So that’s pretty secondary stuff, you need a deterrent.”

Presenter Olivia Utley turned the discussion to the state of play in the Conservative Party, asking Green whether the party is “waiting for a new leader” before becoming an “effective opposition”.

Green replied: “When you’re running a leadership campaign it’s very difficult to run normal opposition politics.

“And besides, nobody wants to listen to an opposition party that has just lost a general election. So let’s be realistic about this.”

Green was also asked who of the potential candidates he thought would be best suited to lead the Conservatives after Rishi Sunak’s term in office.

He revealed: “I hope the next leader will be Tom Tugendhat. I think Tom has a military background, he’s absolutely an expert on old security matters, and that’s what really matters in a difficult and increasingly dangerous world.

“But he also produces domestic policies that I find very interesting.”
