Man Arrested for Attempted Rape at Auburn Suicide Scene

A Cayuga County man has been charged with attempted rape, part of the same child sexual exploitation investigation that led to a man fatally shooting himself in front of police in Auburn earlier this month.

Wilver O. Laparra-Gonzalez, 34, of Throop, allegedly paid $80 for intercourse and oral sex with what he thought was a 14-year-old girl but was actually an undercover police officer, according to Auburn City Court records. He was arrested Aug. 8 at the Melone Village Apartments and charged with attempted rape in the second degree and attempted criminal sexual act in the second degree.

Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci told The Citizen that Laparra-Gonzalez’s arrest was part of an investigation that also brought Auburn Police Department officers into contact with Scott R. Demonte, 51, of Fayetteville, at the housing complex the same day. Demonte pointed a gun at officers before shooting himself with a single bullet, killing him.
