They have been ridiculed for their mocking comments on the Hema Commission report, a serious document that sheds light on the disturbing circumstances of harassment and abuse faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.

An event unfolded last week when Sindhu Krishna, wife of Krishna Kumar, posted a video on YouTube. The video gave a glimpse into their daily lives and ended on a sweet note with Krishna and their little girl, Diya, chatting about an upcoming wedding. In a lighthearted and humorous conversation, they discuss what the family should wear to the upcoming wedding. Kumar humorously remarks that his excitement might lead one to believe that he is the groom, rather than his true role – the father of the bride-to-be.

Krishna then says to his wife in Malayalam, “You don’t say anything. This is the season of orders. Don’t say marriage, etc. Don’t come and knock on my door.”

Kumar’s habit of knocking on doors comes across as a biting commentary on the Hema Committee report. The report threw light on the harrowing incidents faced by female actors in the film industry, where they had to endure the nerve-wracking experiences of being harassed by drunken people in their living quarters.

With a quirky smile, Diya Krishna confessed that she simply could not understand the discussion her parents were having. “Despite not fully understanding it, she remains hopeful,” she said. “Ozy, a nickname for Diya, has been kept in the dark about the recent events. She has no clue.”

Her mother noted, “She doesn’t need the summary of absolutely everything. It’s enough for her to know just the basics. She needs to learn how to deal with life’s obstacles,” Krishna Kumar adds. His wife points out that Diya is currently keeping an eye on the details of her upcoming wedding, especially her choices for sarees and blouses. Their daughter chimes in, saying that she is busy with her jewellery brand.

What is the Hema Committee?

The Justice Hema Committee, set up by the Kerala government after the 2017 incident involving an actor, has brought to light cases of exploitation and abuse of women in the Malayalam film industry. After the report was made public, renowned director Ranjith and actor Siddique stepped down from their influential roles in a government-run film academy and AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), respectively, to address allegations of sexual misconduct.
