The Indo Daily: Gangland Succession | 2: Marlo Hyland and the Sicilian Effect

Marlo Hyland

With PJ Judge out of the picture, Marlo Hyland didn’t have to wait long to establish himself as the new face of Ireland’s gangster world. But he wanted to do things differently. A more measured approach to drug dealing, bringing in other criminals to work as a team. A tactic straight out of the Sicilian Mafia’s playbook. The money was rolling in, but a prolific murder of a young Dublin mother would put too much pressure on Martin “Marlo” Hyland.

Slowly but surely, his empire began to crumble around him. Crucially, suspicions began to grow in the criminal underworld that he was a police informant. Fellow gangsters began to wonder why Marlo Hyland had escaped capture or prosecution. It was clear to everyone that his time was running out.

Hyland then began to stay in different houses each night to avoid his enemies. But as time went on, he became more careless and less aware of the deadly enemies that were gathering around him. He lived on and off with his cousin in Scribblestown Park in Finglas, where his killers finally cornered him.

Today on The Indo Daily, Kevin Doyle speaks to The Irish Independent’s special correspondent Paul Williams to discuss the terrifying and bloody reign of Martin “Marlo” Hyland, and the partner who would ultimately betray him. This episode originally aired in March 2024.
