Consequences for the Hema committee: AMMA chairman Mohanlal and the entire board resign

Thrissur, Aug 27 (SocialNews.XYZ) A little over two months after he was elected president of the Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes (AMMA) for the third consecutive term, superstar Mohanlal on Tuesday announced his resignation. The rest of the 17-member executive committee also quit after the film body criticised the revelations in the Justice Hema Commission report.

It was during the AMMA’s annual general meeting in June that Mohanlal secured his third three-year term through the ballot. While the new team was just settling in, the Hema committee report, which had been in cold storage after a protracted legal battle, was finally released on Monday, sending shockwaves through revelations of widespread sexual exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry.

The first victim was AMMA General Secretary Siddique, who resigned on Sunday after a former female actor accused him of sexual harassment years ago. On Monday, several former actresses came forward with allegations that actors like CPI-M legislator Mukesh, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Jayasurya, Edavela Babu and Baburaj had misbehaved with them.

The opposition Congress and BJP jumped on the issue, accusing the Pinarayi Vijayan government of shielding the accused and calling her advocacy for women’s rights nothing more than talk.

Even in the AMMA a major difference of opinion surfaced and with Mohanlal’s wife in hospital the proposed board meeting did not take place. On the request of a section in the AMMA an online meeting was held on Tuesday and it was decided that the entire board would resign.

In two months, a special general meeting will be held, with a new chairman, secretary general and director taking over. Until then, the outgoing committee will function as an ad hoc committee.

Meanwhile, a section of the film industry that disagrees with Mohanlal and his team noted that the veteran superstar did not utter a word in the eight days following the release of Hema Committee. Director Vinayan said that this could be seen as walking away because if the president resigns, that person does not have to comment anymore.
