Anurag Kashyap's 'Gangs of Wasseypur' Re-Released in Theatres

Director Anurag Kashyap has announced that his two-part modern classic, Gangs of Wasseypurwill be re-released in theaters from August 30 to September 5. Tickets are available through the official website of Miraj Cinemas.

Originally released in 2012, this intergenerational revenge saga is set in Wasseypur near Dhanbad and Jharkhand, stars Manoj Bajpayee and introduces actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha, Huma Qureshi, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi and Jaideep Ahlawat.

At the initial release, Gangs of Wasseypur received critical acclaim and was a commercial success.

Co-written by Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri, the film chronicles the coal mafia across three generations, entangled in crime and violence. The soundtrack, composed by Sneha Khanwalkar and Piyush Mishra, with lyrics by Mishra and Varun Grover, was also highly praised.

Anurag Kashyaps Gangs of Wasseypur remains ahead of its time, as it was when it was released. No Hindi film since has matched its mix of ambition, energy and cinephile passion.

Originally intended as a 321-minute film, it was screened in its entirety at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2012. However, as no Indian theatre was willing to screen a five-hour film, it was split into two parts for domestic release.

It is the only Indian film to feature in The Guardian’s list of 100 greatest films of the 21st century.

Both parts received wide critical acclaim and were box office successes. Over the years, the film gained a cult following for its dark humor, experimental soundtrack and raw, realistic filmmaking technique, an approach unheard of in Bollywood.

In a recent interview with ANI, director Anurag Kashyap jokingly remarked, “I want to forget that film.” He added, “People keep asking me when I will do a film like this again.” Gangs of Wasseypur. It’s great that the film is still remembered, but I wish people would recognize my other work as well.”
