Swara Bhasker expresses outrage, solidarity with women in film collective amid sexual harassment findings: “It is heartbreaking to read the commission’s findings”

The actress shared a lengthy statement on Instagram, expressing her “sadness” after reading the findings of the Hema committee following its recent report that exposed sexual harassment and exploitation within the Malayalam cinema industry.

Part of the statement read: “It was heartbreaking to read the commission’s findings. Even more heartbreaking because it is well known. Maybe not every detail and not every little detail, but the bigger picture of what the women have testified is all too well known.”

She also mentioned that the entertainment industry has always been dominated by men. She wrote: “Showbiz is and has always been a male-centric industry, a patriarchal power structure. It is also very perception-driven and risk-averse. Every day of production – shooting days but also pre-production and post-production days – are days when the meter is running and money is being spent. No one likes disruption. Even if the disruptor has made her voice heard for what is ethically correct. It is so much more convenient and financially practical to just get on with it.”

The Veere Di Wedding actor considered the deep-rooted feudal structure of showbiz and the larger dynamics within the entertainment industry. She explained how a culture of silence and complicity is fostered by the industry’s hierarchical structure, which treats senior executives as demigods.

She wrote: “Showbiz is not only patriarchal, it is also feudal in nature. Successful actors, directors and producers are elevated to the status of demigods and whatever they do is permissible. If they do something untoward, the norm is for everyone around them to look away. If someone makes too much noise and does not drop a problem, label him as ‘troublemakers’ and make him bear the burden of his over-enthusiastic conscience. Silence is the convention. Silence is appreciated. Silence is practical and silence is rewarded.”

Meanwhile, on August 19, the 296-page report of the Hema Commission was made public. It contains testimonies from several female professionals. In many cases, the report uses the term ‘girls’ instead of ‘women’, suggesting that minors may have also experienced sexual harassment.

The culprits are not identified in the extensive report. It revealed the most sinister aspects of Malayalam cinema, which has a significant global fan base.
