From research initiatives to conversion activities, everything about the “Joshua Project” linked to the caste census

SSharp revelations have surfaced regarding Project Joshua, an American research initiative that primarily focuses on collecting comprehensive data on ethnic and religious groups around the world that have few or no followers of the Christian sect. According to the details on the mission’s website, “Project Joshua is a research initiative that aims to highlight the population groups of the world with the least followers of Christ.”

It goes on to say that “Accurate, up-to-date information about people groups is critical to understanding and completing the Great Commission (a call to make disciples of Christ among every nation or people group). The details continue in “Revelation 5:9 and 7:9-10,” which explain “that there will be people from every tribe, tongue, nation, and people before the throne.”

The project, established in 1995 with its headquarters in the United States, maintains a track record of the progress of missionary groups in reaching individual ethnic groups along with the population groups that have not yet been reached by the missionaries. After analyzing the available data, one would know that the details collected by the group are so comprehensive in nature that they can easily be narrowed down to each sect, sub-section of an ethnic group in a particular region in countries under their observation.

It is widely believed that the project’s extensive data collection is used by the missionaries to continue their ongoing proselytizing activities and thus fulfill the Great Commission call stated on the website.

Conversion activities in Bharat

With over 26 million adherents, forming a majority in three states, namely Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Manipur, where it constitutes over 41% of the total population, the Christian community is the third largest religious group in Bharat. The community also forms a significant population in states like Goa and Kerala, where it forms 25% and 18% of the population respectively. In terms of numbers, it has a strong presence in the state of Tamil Nadu, where it has a population of over four million.

It is to be noted that though the overall share of the Christian community is marginal in the country’s population, there are reports of ongoing attempts at illegal conversion in individual states of Bharat. These attempts are promoted by missionaries on the pretext of providing amenities like education, healthcare and financial assistance, besides distributing rations and spreading misconceptions among marginalized groups like the Dalit community and various ethnic tribes living largely in remote parts of the country.

Moreover, there are several pockets in tribal dominated states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, along with specific regions of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha where the Christian community has a dominant presence. If the reports are credible, there is rampant conversion in such pockets, all of which are reportedly under the Joshua Project.

According to the details available on the website, the project identifies 2,272 groups in Bharat with an annual evangelical growth rate of 3.9%. The magnitude of conversion has been confirmed in a recent survey conducted by a prominent media outlet. The report claims that the Joshua Project has reportedly reached 6 crore people in Bharat and converted four people out of every 100 persons. This has led to an estimate of around 24 lakh conversions to Christianity so far in Bharat.

Ground report by Dainik Bhaskar

According to details of the extensive survey conducted by Dainik Bhaskar, Christians constitute the majority in 82 of the total 110 villages in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand that were surveyed during the 18-day ground report.

The investigation has revealed shocking details such as the training of individuals as part of the Joshua project, who are further tasked with conducting a survey among villagers, besides showing them “videos”. The details of the survey are collected by a supervisor attached to the church, after which a team led by a local pastor visits the selected individuals who have shown interest in the video, and encourages them to convert.

The report further revealed that every village has an individual connected to the network who has been given the title/post of “Prachar”, mainly tasked with convincing people to attend prayers in the church and then converting them. The said individual was paid Rs1,500 for arranging a marriage for a follower of the Christian sect and Rs2,000 for every conversion facilitated by him.

These Prachar people report to local pastors who have been given a salary of Rs 10-20k and are also given a vehicle to move around. All the pastors in the region work under a “father” who directly reports to the bishops. In order to pay them (fathers) a whopping salary of Rs one lakh they are appointed as directors or heads of hospitals, the report further reveals.

What the organizer finds in his ground report

Interestingly, in April this year, the Organiser team also visited remote parts of the Surguja region of Chhattisgarh, which are marked by rampant conversion. According to the ordeal experienced by the locals, not only is the region witnessing an increase in conversion activities owing to various incentives provided to them by the groups involved in promoting the conversion activities, but shockingly, most of the converts are still found to be practising Hindus on paper, mainly to avail the benefits that come with the reservation.

The Organizer also interacted with the people who provided information about the “Prachar Wale Logbook” (those who were tasked with converting people) who claimed to cure serious illnesses and poverty through charismatic prayers. During the visit it was quite clear that the majority of conversion attempts are aimed at specific ethnic groups who have been cunningly led to change their religion.

Speculation over alleged links to proposed caste census

Moreover, the shocking revelation surrounding the Joshua Project has also led to speculations by some. They argue that the recent attempt by opposition leaders to conduct a caste census across the country could help the ongoing Joshua Project achieve its goal of collecting key socio-economic data on the various caste groups in Bharat.

Caste Count is Project Joshua

These concerns have contributed to the perception that access to such extensive data, directly or through other illicit means, could help the mission groups further their sinister conversion plan, at the expense of the government.
