Mafia: The Old Country marks a huge comeback for the Hangar 13 series, nearly eight years after Mafia 3 released in October 2016. As you might guess from the title of the upcoming game, we’re heading back in time to the literal old country of the Italian mafia – or Sicily, more specifically – for a brand-new story.

Information is still coming out about Mafia: The Old Country, but following Hangar 13’s big reveal for its game at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, there’s still plenty to unpack. Mafia: The Old Country Release Date Speculation

Mafia: The Old Country is currently scheduled for release sometime next year. 2025.

We didn’t see this in the game’s reveal trailer, but it was thanks to a Tweet from publisher 2K after the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase that revealed the game’s one-year release window, alongside 2K’s other games like Civilization 7 and Borderlands 4. We’ll keep you updated once a firm date is announced, but at least we can rest easy knowing it’s coming out soon either way.

Mafia: The Old Country is specifically targeting current-gen hardware, but you might have guessed that given how polished and impressive the cinematic reveal trailer was. So you can expect The Old Country to be on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms when the time comes.

Above, you can check out the full trailer for Mafia: The Old Country, as it debuted at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024. The trailer gives us a glimpse at the sort of environments we’ll be exploring in the new game, specifically set around 1900s Sicily and the town of San Celeste. If you didn’t already know, this means we’re returning to the same locations that first appeared in Mafia 2.

After the trailer aired, Hangar 13 President Nick Baynes appeared in a special message, revealing that The Old Country would “go back to the roots of what fans love about the Mafia series.” Baynes also hinted that The Old Country would have a more linear story compared to previous games, such as the open world of Mafia 3.

You can interpret this however you like, but to us at least it sounds like Mafia: The Old Country will be deliberately avoiding the mistakes of the series’ past, moving away from the open-world formula in favor of a more focused experience. It’s fair to say that Mafia 3’s open-world wasn’t to everyone’s taste, so this could be great news depending on how you look at it.

Since it’s still a long way off before Mafia: The Old Country’s eventual launch next year, we don’t yet have a retail price for the new game.

Publisher 2K isn’t shy about pricing its new titles at a premium, though: it was the first publisher to charge $70/£70 for a current-gen game for this console version. So you can expect Mafia: The Old Country to hit stores for $70/£70.
