TON Blockchain back online after second outage

The TON blockchain network is operational again after the second outage in two days.

The TON Community announced the news on its Telegram channel early Thursday morning (Hong Kong time), confirming that TON-based asset withdrawals and deposits via Wallet would be processed soon.

The latest disruption, which lasted over four hours, was attributed to a “heavy load caused by the minting of DOGS tokens.”

TON suffers from two outages in two days

The recent outage follows a similar outage on Tuesday afternoon (US time), which was resolved shortly after midnight.

Both outages were related to the launch of the DOGS token, which was first noted by observers and later confirmed by the TON network.

Despite the setbacks, Toncoin, the native token of the TON protocol, surged 8% in value following the news, according to CoinDesk Indices.

However, the level is still below what it was before the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov.

Although Telegram and TON are legally separate, their close ties have attracted attention, especially after Durov’s recent arrest in France.

He faces charges including facilitating illegal transactions, child exploitation and failure to cooperate with authorities.

DOGS token leads to TON network outage

The launch of the DOGS token caused significant congestion on the TON blockchain, leading to an unexpected network outage.

The overwhelming demand for the airdropped DOGS tokens caused a massive increase in on-chain activity, putting pressure on the network’s capacity.

On Tuesday evening, the official account of the TON blockchain on X reported a disruption in block production due to an “abnormal load,” noting that approximately 20 million transactions had been processed in the previous 48 hours.

DOGS was launched in July 2024 and is billed as the “most Telegram-native memecoin,” inspired by Spotty, a mascot popularized by Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov.

The DOGS token has quickly gained a significant following, with the official Telegram channel, Dogs Community, having nearly 17 million subscribers.

Additionally, the official DOGS Community account on X has amassed 3.9 million followers since its launch in July, putting it on par with major players like Pi Network and Ethereum in terms of social media influence.

Durov released on $5.56 million bail

Meanwhile, French authorities have released Durov on bail, but under strict conditions. He must pay €5 million, report to the police twice a week and stay within French borders.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the judge had found sufficient grounds to formally investigate Durov on all the charges for which he was initially detained.

These charges include alleged complicity in operating an online platform that facilitates illegal transactions, the distribution of child pornography, drug trafficking, fraud, failure to cooperate with authorities, money laundering and providing cryptographic services to criminals.

However, a video shared by Russia’s state news agency RIA on Telegram, and later on X, shows Durov apparently dressed in black, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, leaving the prosecutor’s office and getting into a vehicle on Wednesday evening.
