Tasks and responsibilities

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its protocols, including the Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants Protocols. UNODC is mandated to promote global compliance with the Protocols and to assist Member States in their efforts to implement them effectively. UNODC provides technical assistance in assessing and strengthening national responses to the prevention, investigation and prosecution of the crimes, developing international cooperation, and respecting the rights of migrants and victims. These functions are based in the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS) of the Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB) of the Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna. The UNODC Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS) works to advance the international agenda for combating trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants in all UN-related inter-agency and inter-governmental processes and fora, including supporting activities related to the provision of legislative assistance to UN Member States upon request. It further works to develop and disseminate knowledge on trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants through the publication of thematic and technical tools. Internships are UNPAID and full-time (40 hours, 5 days a week). Internships can be carried out in-person or remotely. For more information about UNODC, please visit our website: www.unodc.org The interns provide substantial, organizational and logistical support to the day-to-day work of the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section. The interns will focus in particular on some of the tasks below, depending on the sub-team they are part of: » Conduct background research and analysis of the country situation, trends and concepts related to trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants; » Assist in providing technical support for the planning, implementation and monitoring of regional and national technical assistance projects and activities; » Assist in preparing training materials for technical assistance activities, such as capacity building workshops; » Assist in collecting and analysing case law, and uploading materials to the Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants databases on SHERLOC; » Assist in knowledge development and management, including updating the KNOWTS e-hub; » Assist in the preparation and conduct of intergovernmental meetings and other events, such as the Working Groups on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants; » Contribute to the drafting of official UNODC submissions or related guidelines; » Assist in strengthening UNODC’s involvement in inter-agency fora; » Assist in liaising with United Nations offices, other external organisations and Member States; » Assist in preparing briefings, statements, presentations and communications; » Compile weekly press clippings on smuggling and trafficking in persons; » Perform other tasks related to the implementation of the UNODC Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants, as requested.

Qualifications/Special Skills

To be eligible for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed the final academic year of, a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN EVIDENCE FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION); • Have studies in criminology, law, political or social sciences, international relations or in a related field; • Have good analytical skills, good drafting skills; computer skills, particularly MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrable keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Demonstrated ability to deal successfully with people from different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which means being willing to try to understand and be tolerant of different opinions and viewpoints.

Languages

English and French are the working languages ​​of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for the position being advertised. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations is an advantage.
