El Paso CBP Seizes 150 Pounds of Methamphetamine, Arrests 26 Fugitives, Issues Fines for Agricultural Violations

The vigilance of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at El Paso ports has resulted in numerous enforcement actions over the past 10 days, including drug seizures, fugitive apprehensions, and penalties for agricultural violations. These activities underscore the multifaceted approach CBP is taking to secure the border and enhance public safety.

Leading these operations was a significant methamphetamine seizure at the Port of Ysleta on August 19, 2024, as reported by CBP. Under Operation Apollo X, CBP officers seized 150 pounds of meth from a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old U.S. citizen. Anomalies noted during a routine X-ray scan and a drug detection dog alert led to the discovery of 129 bundles concealed inside the vehicle. “Homeland security is our primary mission, but the continued vigilance of CBP personnel results in significant enforcement activity involving a wide range of violations,” Hector A. Mancha, director of Field Operations for CBP El Paso, said in a statement. The driver was turned over to the Texas Department of Public Safety for prosecution.

In addition to this large drug bust, methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and marijuana were also seized during that time. The intensive enforcement by CBP agents also yielded 26 NCIC fugitives, including individuals wanted for serious offenses such as sexual exploitation of minors and drug charges.

Additionally, agricultural specialists played a critical role by issuing $3,125 in fines to individuals attempting to bring prohibited products into the U.S. Items seized included pork, mangoes, pomegranates and live plants. “Members of the public are reminded to declare all products purchased abroad to CBP upon entry,” the agency stressed, advocating for compliance to avoid fines, CBP said. Weapons and unreported amounts of currency in excess of $90,000 were also among the hauls during this enforcement period.

These CBP enforcement efforts are an integral part of the broader strategy to maintain the integrity of U.S. borders. Seizures and arrests were conducted in accordance with CBP regulations, and all individuals arrested are being prosecuted by the appropriate federal or state authorities.
