Explosive Hema Commission Report Reveals Intimidation in Malayalam Film Industry

Actor Radhikaa Sarathkumar has reacted to the findings of the recently released Hema Commission report, which reveals shocking details of sexual harassment and exploitation faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. Sarathkumar highlighted the role played by the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) in initiating the report. She pointed out that the findings were released only four years later and only became public after a court order.

Speaking to ANI, Sarathkumar said, “The Hema Committee was initiated by WCC, a group that advocates for women’s rights and working conditions. Though the report was compiled, it remained with the government for four years until a court ordered its release. Since its publication, numerous allegations have surfaced, severely affecting the upper echelons of the Malayalam film industry. This initiative is aimed at protecting women. Throughout my career, I have seen many issues that have to evolve with changing times and lifestyles. It is crucial to address these issues.”

Earlier, veteran actor Mohanlal had praised the Kerala government for releasing the Justice Hema Committee report. ‘We welcome the Hema Committee report. The government’s decision to release it was correct. AMMA cannot answer all questions; these have to be addressed collectively. This industry has many hardworking individuals, but not everyone should be blamed. Misdoers will face consequences after investigation,’ Mohanlal said.

Mohanlal clarified that he was not part of any power group within the Malayalam film industry and denied any knowledge of such groups. “Those who have evidence against them should be punished,” he added, addressing the allegations of sexual misconduct against members of the industry.

Recently, Mohanlal and other AMMA leaders resigned after serious allegations of sexual abuse were made against several prominent figures in Malayalam cinema, including director Ranjith and actors Siddique and Mukesh. The partially declassified report of the Justice Hema Committee, unveiled earlier this month, has laid out alarming accounts of harassment, exploitation and abuse of women in the industry, which has created a stir.
