About 50 supporters of Kornelia Ninova gathered in front of the headquarters of the Bulgarian Socialist Party for the start of today’s meeting of the National Council. Kornelia Ninova resigned as leader of the BSP after the party’s poor performance in the last parliamentary elections.

Protesters wanted to enter the party headquarters to participate in the rally, but the police blocked them. Kornelia Ninova is expected to be fined during the rally.

“We have collected more than 400 signatures from BSP members and sympathizers from all over Bulgaria who support the protest. The petition is not only against the expulsion of Kornelia Ninova, but also against the fact that the party is currently being taken over in a completely improper way,” say supporters of Kornelia Ninova. They reject the decisions of the temporary leadership and claim that the lists of candidates for the upcoming elections have already been drawn up in secret.

The protesters chanted “Traitors,” “Resign,” “Mafia” and “Capitalists cannot be at the helm of the BSP.”

Earlier, BSP youth had plastered the headquarters with stickers reading ‘BSP without Ninova’.

“Rest assured, we will register the party for elections with candidates proposed by you. The party will not be prevented from participating in elections because of the personal ambitions of some individuals,” said Kornelia Ninova, who spoke to the protesters together with her colleague Georgi Svilenki.
