Dhanya Rajendra criticised for ‘selective reporting’ and launching witch hunt against Mohanlal

The News Minute Editor-in-Chief Dhanya Rajendra is facing massive backlash from a section of social media users, especially supporters of popular actor Mohanlal, over allegations of ‘selective reporting’ on the Justice Hema Committee report.

Interestingly, her outlet recently published an article titled: ‘Kerala government in a tight spot, who will win the AIADMK contract? | Powertrip #68‘ in which they exclusively used Mohanlal’s photo. They are also accused of using Mohanlal’s photo while reporting on shocking allegations made by actress Radhika Sharathkumar who alleged that some men in the industry had installed hidden cameras in luxury vans of actresses to record their obscene videos.

The actors’ fans reacted strongly to the lead photo in the article and the alleged insinuations against Mohanlal. They lashed out at the TNM editor-in-chief, criticizing her for her mundane, yellow journalism. They started a witch hunt against the actor.

They also accused her of trying to protect a few members of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) who are allegedly involved in the use and promotion of narcotics in the cinema industry. They hit out at ‘The News Minute’ and its editor-in-chief, alleging that it deliberately did not report on drug abuse and drug use at film parties, which was mentioned in the Justice Hema Committee report. Fans of the actor have accused Dhanya Rajendra of being close to a few actresses and filmmakers who were allegedly involved in drug abuse.

An X user criticised Rajendran for using Mohanlal’s photo and wrote, “Use a legend’s photo for more followers. Also mention about drug users.”

Another user wrote: “What is the connection between Radhika’s interview and Mohanlal as a thumbnail in this article?”

“There is a point at which your professionalism is compromised by intense dislike, conscious or unconscious. Why is there so much animosity towards Mr Mohanlal? Has Radhika mentioned his name?” another user commented while replying to her post on X.

Following the outrage, the TNM team defended itself for using Mohanlal’s photo in the said article, stating that the article was about the disbandment of AMMA, which Mohanlal was in charge of, hence his photo. However, TNM journalist Korah Abraham noted that their reports mentioned that some actors had ‘souvenirs’ and insinuated, “These souvenirs, we were told, could be CCTV footage for blackmailing. That’s why she said watch Radhika’s video (her second tweet) and come back to read this.”

However, according to the allegations, Dhanya Rajendran, editor-in-chief of The News Minute, was part of a group of actresses Rima Kallingal and Parvathy Thiruvothu who were members of the Women’s Collective in Cinema (WCC). It was the WCC’s petition that eventually led to the formation of the Justice Hema Committee to address issues faced by actresses in the Malayalam film industry.

Interestingly, a photo has surfaced on social media showing Dhanya taking a picture with Malayalam actresses Rima and Parvathy. The photo is said to have been taken during a world tour.

According to her Instagram account, she seems to be close to the Malayalam actresses as she has been pictured with them multiple times, which she has also shared on her account. Earlier, Rajendran had uploaded a picture with actress Parvathy Thiruvothu on her Instagram account in which she mentioned Rima and suggested that she take a picture and meet up with her next time. Apart from this, actress Rima has also shared pictures of TNM editor and actress Parvathy on her account while wishing them on their birthday.

Recently, Tamil actress Suchitra came out in public to protest against the open use of drugs at parties and film sets. In a recent interaction, she accused Rima Kallingal and her husband Ashiq Abu, a director in the Malayalam industry, of promoting narcotics at their parties and film sets.

Several netizens shared her short clip, stating that Dhanya’s digital outlet did not report on it. It is also said that the actress-director-wife duo – Rima and Abu – are involved in a gang funded by a banned jihadist organisation, Jamaat-e-Islami.

Meanwhile, several users alleged bias among some players, including the lobby that is conducting a witch hunt against Mohanlal.

According to a section of social media users, there are two camps in the Malayalam film industry: the Kochi group is hatching a plot against the Thiruvananthapuram group of cinematographers on the pretext of sexual abuse allegations discussed in the Hema Commission report. According to them, the Kochi lobby is being supported by the Left ecosystem and outlets like TNM as they have a bone to pick with actors like Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi who are considered pro-Sanatan voices and supporters of PM Modi and do not allow anti-Hindu groups to bring woke and other dark agendas into the Malayalam film industry.

(Users also claim that Abu has ties to radical organizations)

There have been several allegations that there is a lobby against Sanatani filmmakers and actors like Mohanlal. They not only campaign fiercely against films that are deeply rooted in Sanatan traditions but also promote Islamic fundamentalism. In line with these allegations, another allegation has often surfaced about director Aashiq Abu’s alleged links with banned Islamic fundamentalist organisations like Jamaat-e-Islami and Popular Front of India. OpIndia could not independently verify the veracity of the allegations.

Director Abu has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past. In July 2018, he was hit with allegations of “financial fraud”. An industrialist, CT Abdul Rahman, had filed a complaint with the Malayalam Producers Association alleging that his company had invested Rs 2.40 crore in the production of the film. Though they were promised 60 percent of the profits, apart from the principal amount, Abu failed to pay the entire amounts due.

The findings of the Hema Committee report highlight the menace of drug abuse in the Malayalam film industry

The Hema Committee report also highlighted the deep-rooted activities of the drug mafia in the Malayalam film industry. According to the Mathubrumi report, it was found that crimes against women often take place after drinking alcohol or taking drugs, and some young actors were said to be regular drug users.

The Intelligence Department has also reported that drug use is openly taking place on the sets of some upcoming films and that closing parties are held after the shooting is over. However, the police and excise teams have been reluctant to carry out inspections on the sets despite having information about the groups that regularly supply drugs and the individuals who use them.

According to the report, drug gangs have been active on film sets for more than a decade. The widespread use of chemical drugs came to light a decade ago when a group, including actors, was caught with cocaine. Several crew members and actors have been arrested since then, the report said.
