Bengaluru Police books Bengali journalist and Jaipur Dialogues for ‘spreading fake news’ against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi

On Sunday, September 1, Bengaluru police charged a Bangladeshi journalist, along with staff of Jaipur Dialogues, an Indian news website, with spreading false information about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi, with the intention of damaging their image.

The High Grounds police have filed a case against Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, a journalist and editor of Bengali weekly Blitz, and Aditi of Jaipur Dialogues. According to reports, Srinivas G, a member of the Congress legal team, approached the police to file a First Information Report (FIR).

According to Srinivas’ allegation, Choudhury had claimed on his X account that Sonia Gandhi was a Pakistani ISI spy. The Congress functionary added that with an aim to stoke enmity between two religions, Choudhary had claimed in his post that Sonia Gandhi still practices Christianity despite being in an interfaith marriage and having acquired Indian citizenship. Srinivas told the police that Choudhury had alleged that Rahul Gandhi and one of his foreign colleagues had sexually assaulted a woman.

Srinivas further alleged that Aditi shared Choudhury’s post on her X account, The Jaipur Dialogues, through which she reached more people.

Commenting on the FIR in the case, Jaipur Dialogues called the Congress party a ‘fascist’. “This is the Mohabbat ki Dukaan that Rahul Gandhi and Congress talk about. While they shout about freedom of speech and how they are against fascism, their actions show that they are much worse. A member of our team has been arrested by Bengaluru police for writing an article against Rahul Gandhi. If this is not fascism, we don’t know what is,” the portal posted on X (formerly Twitter).

It also noted that the power of the media has been silenced. “We find it deeply disturbing that the Bengaluru police are using the law as a weapon to crack down on critical discourse. They are labelling allegations of promoting enmity and spreading false information as thinly veiled attempts to intimidate and suppress dissent. This is not about maintaining harmony; it is about protecting the powerful from accountability and shielding them from public scrutiny,” the Jaipur Dialogues said in a report.

“Freedom of expression belongs to every citizen, not just those who toe the line set by those in power. The selective enforcement of the law clearly shows that this is not about justice, but about censorship. It targets only those who criticize certain political figures. This calculated move creates an atmosphere of fear in which questioning the actions of those in power leads to legal retribution,” the report said.

“We call on all those who value freedom of expression to condemn this attack. This is not just about Jaipur Dialogues or Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury. It is about the future of freedom of expression in India. We urge the Bengaluru police to reconsider their actions and defend the democratic values that form the foundation of our nation. The real threat to society is not the free exchange of ideas but the suppression of those ideas through fear and intimidation,” it added.

Bengali journalist Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury has made several posts on X against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. In one of his posts on September 1, he said that the Gandhi family had illegally occupied the house at 10 Janpath, Delhi.

“Catholic Christian and ISI asset Antonia Albina Maino has been occupying this property for decades on a fake lease agreement. Yet 1.40 billion #Indians do not have the right to utter a word. This is a blazing example of #kleptocracy,” he posted.

In an exclusive article, the Bengali journalist also alleged that the Congress party deliberately never called Sonia Gandhi by her original name. He also called Antonia Albina Maino a ‘mafia queen’ and a ‘Pakistani ISI asset’ who is carrying out her ‘activities’ in India.

The Bangladeshi journalist added that Gandhi was staying illegally at 10 Janpath residence in Delhi as she was using her false name and not her original identity, namely Antonia Maino.

“Antonia Albina Maino obtained Indian citizenship with her original name. This means that this is her legal name. But for decades she has been using a false name and there is no document to prove that she has legally changed her name by swearing an oath. According to the law, only Hedvige Antonia Albina Maino or Antonia Albina Maino has the right to stay in the government bungalow at 10 Janpath. Anyone using a false name has no legal right to stay on that property. Similarly, Antonia Albina Maino’s son Raul Vinci, who also uses a false name, has no right to use that property,” the Bangladeshi journalist said.

He also said that Sonia Gandhi should be thrown out of the 10 Janpath house and should no longer be eligible to lead any political party or engage in politics in India. At the same time, he said that the Indian authorities should demand full compensation and financial punishment from Sonia Gandhi for hiding her true identity and using the 10 Janpath property under a false name. “Any government official or prominent politician who engages in such lies should be permanently banned from politics,” he said.

The article also raised a number of questions about Sonia Gandhi’s religion, her ties to Pakistan’s spy agency ISI, her father, her nationality and more.

The FIR was lodged by the High Grounds police under Section 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and Section 353 (2) (publishing or disseminating false information to create hatred on the basis of religion, etc.) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
