KEY figures from the Supreme Court, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) launched yesterday, September 3, in Cagayan de Oro a new system aimed at speeding up the administration of justice by digitalizing the entire judicial process.

The new system marks a significant shift from the traditional paper-based methods previously used by the Justice Department and the Supreme Court.

Speaking at an event at the Cove Garden Resort yesterday morning, Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo said digitalization will speed up the litigation process. He said, “We have to make the transition and we have to commit.”

Also present at the meeting were officials of the Justice Coordinating Council, including Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. and Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo.

Justice Minister Remulla explained that the system will streamline data sharing between government agencies, making it easier for persons deprived of their liberty to exercise their rights.

Digitalization is also expected to improve the system of conditional release and probation, reducing delays that often take years in the manual process.

“This will be the most accessible Supreme Court, digitally connecting all courts and correctional facilities,” Remulla said.

He also noted that the new system will help reduce prison overcrowding by ensuring people are not held longer than necessary.

In addition to the judicial information system, the Ministry of Justice also launched the Anti-Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) initiative.

This initiative will be implemented in three cities: Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Ozamiz.

Remulla highlighted the choice of Cagayan de Oro because of the organization’s involvement in the 2015 Peter Scully case, which involved the abuse of more than 75 children.

Remulla expressed confidence that the city’s support for the cause makes it an ideal model for promoting the Osaec initiative.
