Border agents on high alert for attacks after cartel leader El Bola is captured

Border Patrol agents in Texas have been put on heightened alert for attacks after a high-ranking member of Cartel del Noreste was arrested, believed to be Carlos Munsivais Treviño, also known as “El Bola.”

The arrest on Tuesday, September 3, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, has raised concerns that the violence could spread across the Rio Grande city border into the Texas city of Laredo and beyond.

A memo obtained by NewsNation The Laredo Sector Intelligence Unit warns that the arrest of the cartel leader could lead to an increase in “cross-border violence in the form of retaliation.”

The memo does not mention his name, but the identity of the leader arrested by Mexican authorities on Tuesday was Carlos Munsivais Treviño, the leader of Cartel del Noreste, better known as El Bola or La Bola, according to Mexican media reports.

Newsweek has contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for comment.

The memo advises agents to be cautious when dealing with “military, undocumented non-citizens along the border,” as Cartel del Noreste fighters may seek to flee to the U.S.

It is stated that the situation is being closely monitored by US-Mexico Border Patrol. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Treviño is considered the second most important man within the Cartel del Noreste.

The cartel leader was arrested in Nuevo Laredo by members of the National Guard and the Mexican army and transferred to Mexico City to answer to the court.

El Bola comes from a lineage of drug lords. Cartel del Noreste is a splinter group of the notorious Los Zetas cartel, led by his uncles Miguel Angel and Omar Treviño Morales.

El Bola was reportedly responsible for organizing kidnappings, extortion, and drug and migrant trafficking.

He is also accused of planning armed attacks against members of the Mexican military.

The Cartel del Noreste was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in Nuevo Laredo. However, the organized crime organization is also active outside of Mexico and is also active in the US, Honduras, Guatemala and Colombia.

Nuevo Laredo is a key battleground in the ongoing war between drug cartels, largely due to its strategic location as a major drug trafficking route to the US.

There are many trucks passing through the area and there are multiple ports of entry that can be exploited, making the area ideal for controlling the flow of drugs across the border.

This competition for power between the cartels leads to ongoing violence in the region.
