Equity and Title IX Compliance Investigator at Cornell University – Ithaca (Main Campus)

Through Cornell University Policy 6.4 and applicable student, staff, and faculty procedures, the University provides resources to address bias, discrimination, harassment, and sexual and related misconduct, including gender-based harassment, sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic and relationship violence, stalking, and sexual exploitation.

The Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX (OIETIX) has university-wide responsibilities for civil rights compliance, including primarily preventing and addressing sexual and related misconduct, prohibited discrimination, and protected status harassment. The OIETIX compliance framework includes these four functional areas: compliance administration and office management, data collection and analysis, incident response and resolution, and training and education.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Title IX Coordinator, this role primarily conducts investigations of alleged violations of sexual and related misconduct under Cornell University Policy 6.4 (“Prohibited Bias, Discrimination, Harassment, and Sexual and Related Misconduct”) and Cornell University Policy 6.3 (“Consensual Relationships”). The Investigator serves as a neutral and impartial administrative investigator who independently plans, conducts, and documents investigations into complaints of sexual harassment, sexual violence, stalking, dating and domestic violence, and protected class discrimination and harassment involving students, employees, and third parties. The Investigator also assists with alternative remedies, supportive measures, and adjudicative processes as appropriate, as well as with the development of policies, procedures, and practices. This role supports and provides compliance training and educational sessions and programs, community engagement, outreach, and communications projects. This function is essential to Cornell’s compliance with its civil rights obligations under Title IX and other federal and state laws.

Hybrid/Hub Remote Control

The home base for this role is Cornell’s campus in Ithaca, New York. The successful candidate will typically be expected to work on-site at least 2 days per week, with the ability to work remotely 3 days per week.

New York Convenience of Employer guidelines require New York State individual income tax returns and withholdings for this position. Additional individual income tax returns may also be required if you are temporarily working outside of New York State.

Core requirements:

We are seeking an Equity and Title IX Investigator with a Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of relevant experience conducting investigations, or an equivalent combination of degree and experience. Additionally, the investigator must possess the following:

  • Extensive knowledge of relevant laws (e.g., Title IX, Title VII, ADA, etc.).
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • The ability to be neutral and impartial and to analyze information without passing judgment on people/their actions.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines with a workload that can be unpredictable and reflective of the academic calendar cycle.
  • Demonstrable judgment, problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to work with faculty, staff and students.
  • Experience with and/or demonstrable commitment to supporting diversity, equality, access, inclusion and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

In addition to the above requirements, we prefer a candidate who possesses one of the following qualities:

  • JD or other advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Certification or experience conducting internal Title IX and/or civil rights investigations.
  • Experience conducting trauma-informed interviews and/or knowledge of trauma-informed practices.
  • Experience with employment law and/or HR.
  • Experience in higher education, specifically in the areas of student conduct, Title IX, or civil rights/equal opportunity.
