Edmonton man involved in US child sex abuse investigation

Edmonton… An Edmonton man is facing charges of child sexual exploitation following an investigation into Internet Child Abuse (ICE).

In August 2024, ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit received information from the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) linking an Edmonton man to an investigation in Florida. Trevor smile54 years old, accused of making, sending, accessing and possessing child pornography.

Smiley is said to have been in conversation with a Florida suspect and shared material about child sexual exploitation Jason Davis41 years old from Cooper City, Florida. Davis was arrested on July 31, 2024 and appeared in court the following day as part of an investigation by HSI and the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

The US investigation is said to have uncovered large-scale online group chats devoted to sharing images and videos depicting child sexual abuse. The investigation also led to the arrest of a Massachusetts man.

ICE arrested Smiley on August 28, 2024, and executed a search warrant at his Edmonton home. Several electronic devices were seized for forensic analysis.

“It is incredibly disturbing to see these acts happening in our community, and even more so when we understand the connections of those involved. Our forensic technicians are combing through the seized devices and as our investigation continues, we are asking anyone with information to come forward,” said Sgt. Randy Poon, ALERT ICE.

Smiley’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 5, 2024.
