Why do some, like Jenna Ortega, not feel Latina enough?

There is immense pressure on Ortega and other Latina actors to represent an entire community on screen, something that is nearly impossible for a community that spans dozens of countries, cultures, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and hundreds of indigenous languages. Further complicating matters is that Latina representation on screen in the U.S. is generally mediated by white American audiences and what elite American audiences understand as Latin enough. According to a study by McKinsey & Company, Latinos account for 4% of onscreen roles in theatrically released films, compared to 68% for white Americans, 16% for Asian Americans, and 6% for Black Americans. For a diaspora that is so diverse, the limited representation we have turns the community into a monolith that erases experiences that don’t fit into the white American imagination.
