Grassley Reveals New Details About Alleged Iran-Backed Plot to Assassinate Biden, Trump, Haley

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has released FBI documents revealing Iran’s involvement in a plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

According to Fox News, Grassley made the documents public on Thursday after obtaining them from legally protected police whistleblowers.

The documents disappeared from Grassley’s public Senate page Thursday night. Washington Examiner I contacted the Senator’s office about the removal but have not received a response.

The documents released by the senator and reported by media outlets such as the New York PostFederal investigators have for the first time given a detailed interview with a man accused of an Iranian-backed plot to assassinate Trump. Asif Merchant, a Pakistani man, said he discussed assassination strategies for American political figures with a contact named Mehardad Yousef.

The FBI documents Grassley released showed that the plan to attack “politicians, military personnel or bureaucrats” involved Haley and Biden. Previously declassified information indicated that Trump was the country’s primary target in revenge for his role in the assassination of Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani.

“Merchant asked Yousef what he should tell the mob if they asked who the target of the assassination would be,” the whistleblowers’ disclosures say. “Yousef said it could be Donald Trump, then paused and said it could be Joe Biden or Nikki Haley, or politicians, military personnel, or bureaucrats.”

Grassley warned in a statement that “federal agencies must be fully focused on building public trust and reassuring the American people about their efforts to carry out their protective missions.”

The Iowa senator’s decision to make the whistleblowers’ revelations public was not appreciated by the FBI.

“The FBI does not comment specifically on documents that have been reportedly released without authorization,” the agency said in a statement to Fox News. “Public disclosure of sensitive, ongoing national security investigations and potential cooperation from subjects is irresponsible and undermines the FBI’s ability to conduct thorough investigations and enforcement actions that keep Americans safe. It also puts lives at risk, especially when you’re dealing with an adversary like Iran.”
