Is it really possible to ‘crush’ the smuggling gangs?

This year was the deadliest on the English Channel in three years. Six children and a pregnant woman were among 12 who died on Tuesday after their boat sank off the French coast, bringing the death toll in 2024 to almost 40.

Today, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is hosting a summit aimed at tackling the criminal gangs that operate boats across the Channel.
