Kollywood Cine Actors Keep Stoically Silent Over Hema Commission Report As Industry Grapples With Sexual Abuse Allegations

The wave of sexual abuse and rape allegations rocking the Malayalam film industry has now reached Tamil Nadu, with shocking new allegations coming to light by South Indian actor Sowmya. In an emotional interview with NDTV, Sowmya revealed horrific details of the abuse she endured at the hands of a Tamil director, including claims of severe mental, physical and sexual exploitation.

Sowmya accused the director of inserting a rod into her genitalsentertainmentand take care of her like asex slavefor several years. She explained that the director, whose identity she will not reveal at this time, initially approached her along with his wife when she was just 18 years old. The director manipulated her into a vulnerable state by posing as a father figure, expressing a disturbing desire to have a child with her, and then repeatedly raping her during her college years.

According to Sowmya, the abuse did not stop even after she entered the Malayalam film industry, where she appeared in three successful films in the 1990s. The exploitation continued and Sowmya plans to director identity to the special police team set up by the Kerala government, which is currently investigating multiple cases of sexual abuse in the film industry.

In the interview, Sowmya also shared how her family was forced to let her act after the director pressured her father, claiming that a significant amount had already been spent at her screen test. Despite her initial discomfort, Sowmya felt compelled to go ahead with the project. She recounted how the director, who had given her hisdaughter, began hitting on her, while dismissing his own biological daughter’s rape allegations as lies.

As the manipulation escalated, so did the abuse. Sowmya described how one day the director kissed her when his wife was not there, and herdaughter.Frozen and ashamed, she felt unable to tell her friends about the attack. Over time, the abuse became worse, and she eventually suffered sexual assault from other actors and technicians. One of her co-stars, who she claims also sexually abused her, has been named in the report of the Hema Commission, a major investigation into sexual misconduct in the Malayalam film industry.

Sowmya went on to recount a particularly humiliating incident where someone spat paan on her. After years of abuse, she revealed that it took her 30 years to recover from the shame and trauma. Now she is speaking out to encourage other survivors to come forward and share their stories.

Her revelations come as the Malayalam film industry is reeling from a flood of allegations of sexual misconduct following the release of the Justice Hema Committee report. The report, commissioned by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case, revealed widespread harassment and exploitation of women in the industry. Several prominent actors, including Mukesh, an MLA in the ruling CPM party, have been implicated in multiple allegations of sexual abuse.

Rajini, Kamal, Vijay, Jiiva, Karthi’s Response (lack thereof) to the Hema Commission report

Actor Rajinikanth feigned innocence, claiming that he was never aware of the issue or the existence of the Hema committee report. When asked about calls to set up a similar panel in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth said he was not aware of the report and refused to comment.

Actor-politicians like Kamal Haasan, who is accused of kissing a minor actress, have not said a word about it. Vijay has also not said anything about the issue.

As actor Radhika Sarathkumar pointed out in an interview with Sun News, Many top actors from Tamil cinema have taken out time to post about the F4 race in Chennai but are shocking to see that they say nothing at all about the Hema committee report.

Follow Radhika from Sarathkumar interview with Asian where she spoke about harassment in the Malayalam industry, actor Jiiva was asked about these claims and the broader issues raised by the Hema Commission reportJiiva maintained that such problems did not exist in Tamil cinema, claiming that these problems were locked up to the Malayalam industry. Despite his initial advice to avoid such questions at a public event, Jiiva’s frustration grew as journalists pressed him further. The situation escalated into a verbal exchange, with Jiiva eventually left the venue without further comment. However, his comments have drawn attention to the need for greater scrutiny of harassment in the Tamil film industry.

Karthi, the treasurer of the Nadigar Sangam, avoided raising the subject during a press meet for his upcoming film Meiyazhagan. When asked by the media, he replied:This is not the place to have this conversation.”

No debate by Dravidian media

It is common knowledge that the mainstream media in Tamil Nadu is nothing but an extension of the propaganda wing of the DK-DMK, with the anchors being the spokespersons of these parties.

If you look at the debates being conducted by the Dravidian media, it seems that they are making a concerted effort to confine the issue to Kerala. It is striking that there are surprisingly few debates moderated by prominent Dravidian anchors in the Hema Committee Report. Perhaps they want to ensure that the fallout does not extend to Tamil Nadu, as it could disrupt the Dravidian film ecosystem, which is currently in the grip of the state’s first family. There are so many rumours doing the rounds about… well, the readers will know.

Nadigar Sangam finally responds to Hema committee report

The controversy surrounding sexual misconduct in the Malayalam film industry has left the South Indian Artists Association (SIAA), also known as Nadigar Sangam, to take strict action in Tamil Nadu. The association held a meeting in light of the Hema Commission report to discuss how to tackle similar cases of abuse in the Tamil film industry.

The actors announced that it will take strict action against persons found guilty of sexual offences, including imposing a five-year ban on offenders. In a resolution passed during the meeting, Nadigar Sangam stressed the importance of forming a Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) to address complaints related to sexual harassment. The committee will also provide legal assistance to victims. However, the leadership stressed that women should report their complaints to the committee before publicising them in the media.

Nadigar Sangam assured that all complaints would be thoroughly investigated And that a warning would are issued to alleged perpetrators before further action is taken. The association has set up a special phone number and a new email address for victims to file complaints. Senior female actors like Suhasini, Kushboo and Lissy attended the meeting, offer their support to the initiative.

The association has also promised to help those who are looking for to take legal action against inappropriate content on YouTube channels. The measures come as the Tamil film industry is on edge and keeping a close eye on criminal cases in Kerala, where more than 20 cases have been filed against actors, directors and production heads registered.

As more survivors come forward with their stories, revelations in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries continue to raise widespread concerns about the treatment of women in cinema. It remains to be seen whether the establishment of commissions like the GSICC in Tamil Nadu will effectively address these issues and ensure that perpetrators of sexual violence are held accountable.
